Introduction
Poetry Tasting - Students complete a gallery walk of the poems which are on butcher paper. Students rate the poems using a simple scale of +,0,-. After a class discussion of what they liked and disliked, a sample analysis is started on the poem with the most favorable ratings.
Analysis
Exploring Context - Students complete this independently using iPads or personal devices.
Poetry Analysis Packet - Analysis is completed whole class, small group, and individually using these poems. Students hone their analytical skills in preparation for the final project.

Thematic Pairing Analysis - Students practice comparing poems that are linked thematically.
Final Project
Album Study Instructions - Students work in collaborative partnerships to analyze songs as poetry and as they relate to the album as a whole. Each student has assigned jobs and is assessed on their own work and ability to work together.

Logical Fallacy Practice - After taking notes, Students practice identifying fallacies.
Identifying Logical Fallacies in Print Ads and Commercials Gallery Walk - Students continue identifying fallacies in commercial advertisements in a partnered gallery walk.
Identifying and Analyzing Appeals in Public Service Announcements - Students view public service announcements to identify appeals and analyze argument.
Public Service Announcement Project - Students demonstrate understanding of fallacies and argument by choosing a topic and creating both a print ad and video public service announcement in small collaborative groups.

Essay Planning
Outline Examples - Students are shown a variety of methods to outline their thoughts for essay writing.
Outline/Persuasive Notes - Notes on STAAR essay writing organization and evidence.
Essay Writing Portfolio - Students compile a portfolio of their writing growth prior to the STAAR test. They are expected to revise, edit, and recognize their writing strengths and weaknesses through peer and teacher feedback and personal reflection.
Peer Essay Evaluation - Peer feedback form that must be completed for at least one essay.
Thesis Statements
Introduction to Thesis Statements - A review/introduction to good thesis statements used in a STAAR "BootCamp" style review session.
Additional Thesis Statement Practice - Written thesis statement practice
